On August 7, 2024, the Khongjal Community Hall in Phungyar CDP was filled with vibrant colors and textures of traditional textiles, as around 30 weavers gathered to celebrate 10th National Handloom Day which was organised by District Handloom & Textiles, Kamjong and sponsored by Directorate of Handlooms and Textiles, Manipur. This significant event was graced by Chanvophy Hungyo, textile designer, Phungyar Cluster CDP, who served as the chief guest. The celebration was a testament to the rich heritage of handloom weaving, highlighting the skill and dedication of local artisans.

Chanvophy Hungyo’s address to the gathering was both enlightening and inspiring. She began by delving into the origins of National Handloom Day in India, explaining that it was first celebrated on August 7, 2015. The day was chosen to commemorate the Swadeshi Movement, which began on the same date in 1905. This movement, which encouraged the boycott of foreign goods and the revival of domestic products, particularly handloom textiles, played a pivotal role in India’s fight for independence. Hungyo emphasized that the observance of Handloom Day is not just about remembering the past but also about acknowledging the present-day significance of the handloom industry.

The chief guest underscored the importance of the handloom sector in today’s market. She pointed out that handloom products are not only a source of livelihood for millions of weavers across India but also a symbol of sustainable fashion. Unlike mass-produced textiles, handloom fabrics are eco-friendly, crafted with minimal environmental impact, and imbued with cultural heritage. Hungyo encouraged the weavers to recognize the value of their craft and to explore the wide range of products that can be created using handloom textiles, from clothing and accessories to home decor items.

Furthermore, Chanvophy Hungyo inspired the attendees to harness their inherent skills in weaving to develop new textiles and products. She stressed that with creativity and dedication, the weavers could generate substantial income, thereby improving their livelihoods. She urged them to take pride in their craft, continuously innovate, and strive to meet the demands of a growing market that increasingly values handmade, artisanal goods.

In a gesture of appreciation and encouragement, Hungyo presented a gift of appreciation to 3 weavers who showcased the best traditional outfits during the event. This acknowledgment not only recognized their efforts in preserving traditional attire but also motivated others to uphold and celebrate their cultural heritage.

The event concluded with the serving of refreshments, providing an opportunity for the weavers to socialize, exchange ideas, and reflect on the day’s discussions. As the weavers dispersed, they carried with them a renewed sense of purpose and pride in their craft, inspired by the words of Chanvophy Hungyo and the collective celebration of their heritage.

The National Handloom Day celebration at Khongjal Community Hall was more than just a gathering; it was a reaffirmation of the enduring significance of handloom weaving in the cultural and economic fabric of the community. The event highlighted the potential of traditional skills to create sustainable livelihoods and underscored the importance of preserving and promoting this invaluable heritage for future general .
